Paul Rogers came to Camp LIFE in 2008. He still prays for his group everyday

In 2008 I was at Camp LIFE for two weeks in July. What a fantastic trip ministering to AIDS orphans in Zambia. During both week I got so close to all of my guys. Each week I transcribed each of their stories into my journal. I also got the details of the lives of my evangelist (translators) and apostle (helper.) It’s March of 2010 and I am still praying for each of my guys and Family Legacy staff in Zambia and America. I use several verses to guide my praying.

The primary one is from the Lord’s Prayer, “Give us this day our daily bread. (Matt 6:11)” Until this trip I had neglected praying for my own daily bread since I typically had 3 loaves of bread in the freezer. But now I am a part of a group that some days only gets one meal a day. Now this prayer is very important to me because of the group.

My guys lived in a variety of situations, several had lost dads so they were raised by a single mom in a society with 70% unemployment. Some had lost both parents and were living with grandparents or other relatives and some had been separated from their siblings. With losses like these I pray Isaiah 61:1-4 for them:

1 The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me,
because the LORD has anointed me
to preach good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners,
2 to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor
and the day of vengeance of our God,
to comfort all who mourn,
3 and provide for those who grieve in Zion—
to bestow on them a crown of beauty
instead of ashes,
the oil of gladness
instead of mourning,
and a garment of praise
instead of a spirit of despair.
They will be called oaks of righteousness,
a planting of the LORD
for the display of his splendor.
4 They will rebuild the ancient ruins
and restore the places long devastated;
they will renew the ruined cities
that have been devastated for generations.

For my guys, I ask the Holy Spirit to bind up broken hearts and pour out the oil of gladness on those that grieve the loss of family members. I pray that God will provide for them to go to school. My guys had various dreams…pilot, doctor, lawyer, writer, electrician, and even a pastor. I pray that God will use my guys and their gifts to rebuild their devastated country in every area of business and culture.

I also pray for the Holy Spirit to invade their families and save their caregivers. I pray that God will provide jobs for their caregivers and that the caregivers will provide for and protect my guys.

The rainy season has been especially difficult this year as several days of non-stop rain has led to flooding all around the capital city of Zambia. The worst affected areas are the compounds where we work, such as Kanyama and Chawama. The roads are full of gigantic holes and there is no formal drainage system.

We ask that you join us in praying for a few things:

Pray against cholera. Huge amounts of stagnant water often leads to cholera outbreaks in the compounds of Lusaka. It is likely unavoidable at this point, but please pray against it.

That children would be able to get to our CRCs. The children know that whenever they are in trouble, they should come to the CRC. The flooding can make it a lot more difficult to get around and we don’t want a child having to sleep outside because they can’t get to the CRC.

That our staff would be able to travel freely. The floods have made it nearly impossible to get to certain areas even in larger cars. Pray that we would be able to get supplies and transport kids as needed.

We have officially reached the goal of raising $380,000 to power up the Village. The contractor has been notified and he expects to begin working on it next week. This is huge for the future of the Tree of Life because it means every new building will have no problem getting electricity or water. So when kids move in this summer, there will be running water. When the school opens, the lights will be on for reading. And when we have Camp LIFE on the hilltop, there will be music playing.

We still have infrastructure needs that we will face as the Village continues to grow such as internal roads. If you did not get a chance to donate to bring power to the Village, then you can still help us out with other infrastructure needs. Learn more about the infrastructure campaign»

Thanks so much to everyone who donated to make this happen. If you are coming to Camp LIFE this summer then you will get to see firsthand the results of your giving. Please continue to pray and give what you can to make a better future for the children of Zambia.

For most of them it was the only gift they received this year so they were hugely blessed. Be checking your mail in the coming weeks as we’ll be sending out pictures to those of you who paid for your child to attend. Thanks so much for enabling us to give these kids a great Christmas. Here is a small sample of the 750 kids who attended this year’s Christmas Party

To get ready for camp we are holding 3 team meetings in Austin, Houston, Dallas and via conference call if you don’t live near any of those spots. Below you can find the dates, times and locations for the first team meetings. If you live far from one of those areas then we will email you the conference call information. We’ll see you there!
